Gas Utility Manager

The Dene Tha’ First Nation (DTFN) is inviting applications from experienced members for the position of Gas Utility Manager. This position is a 2-year full-time contract position that offers a competitive benefits package.

 

Position Summary

 

Reporting to the Executive Director of Operations, the Gas Utility Manager shall be responsible for operational oversight of natural gas and propane services to three separate communities – Bushe River, Meander River, and Chateh.

 

Functions and Key Responsibilities:

  • Regular reporting to the DTFN Executive Director of Operations (EDO); general response to member or customer gas service needs and follow-up in solving member or customer needs. Supervision of DTNGU employees.
  • Leading and coordinating the safe, efficient construction, maintenance and operation of the Nation’s gas transmission and distribution systems.
  • Performing inspections of activities to ensure adherence to Nation standards, internal policies, procedures, and external regulations.
  • Preparing for and responding to gas related emergencies.
  • Support and carry out gas meter reading according to a repetitive cycle and coordinate submission of readings with the Federation of Alberta Gas Coops Ltd. RUBIS system.
  • Monitor all customer payments and notifications for turn-off and turn-on of service due to lack of payment.
  • Oversee and direct 24-hour emergency response services.
    • Conduct or oversee minor repairs to heating systems within the scope of the Operator’s certification,
    • All other repairs are conducted by qualified sub-contractors arranged for and supervised by the Operator.
  • Respond to and arrange for line repairs, upgrades, extensions, and individual building service connections.
    • Either by the Operator or by qualified sub-contractors or supplier of natural gas or propane gas,
    • Location of underground utilities is to be arranged with and verified by Alberta OneCall service,
    • To carry out such maintenance in accordance with best practices and the Federation of Alberta Gas Coops Ltd Operations and Maintenance Manual.
  • Possess required safety and training certificates related to the designated gas utility operation (e.g., WHIMIS, first aid, confined entry, etc.) and comply with all provisions of the Worker’s Compensation Act, the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations. Additionally, possess the minimum training certificates provided by the Federation of Alberta Gas Coops Ltd. and be committed to enrolling in and completing annual gas operator training programs.

 

Required Competencies:

  • Education related to the construction, maintenance and/or operation of the Nation’s gas transmission and distribution systems.
  • Technical or Trade programs in a related field would be an asset.
  • 2-5 years of Management experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe work habits and adhere to safety regulations.
  • Able to take initiative, work independently and with others.
  • Excellent leadership skills and team-building ability.
  • Highly developed supervisory, risk and crisis management skills.
  • Possesses an ability to write and produce quality reports in a timely manner.
  • Proficient computer literacy.
  • Any related education and training will be considered an asset.

 

The successful candidate must have a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with reliable transportation, and willingness to travel. Must also provide a clear criminal record check.

Post Secondary Coordinator

The Dene Tha’ First Nation is currently accepting applications for a Post Secondary & High School Education Coordinator. This is a full-time position and comes with a competitive benefits package. This is technical and administrative work in the operation of the Nation’s Post Secondary education program and is based out of the administration office in Chateh.

 

Duties Include:

  • Provides support services to university, college, and high school boarding students
  • Assists students to locate career information
  • Provides students with the opportunity to take vocational interests and aptitude tests and makes necessary arrangements
  • Provides periodic seminars to potential post secondary students on education opportunities, financial and other student services
  • Administers the provisions of the Dene Tha’ Secondary Policy manual
  • Administers the High School Boarding program
  • Maintains and keeps current relevant financial records and student files
  • Prepares projected cash requirement statements
  • The position reports to the Director, Education

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education
  • Successful completion of two years of college or university education in related area
  • One year of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals

Education Assistants (EA’s)

While complying with the Dene Thá  Personnel Policy and the Oath of Confidentiality and fostering safe and caring relationships with the staff and students at the Dene Tha’ Community School,  we have available positions for  Education assistants.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Make students a top priority, especially assisting individuals in the classroom during lesson time.
  • Help with the individual needs of the children (i.e., emotional, social, physical, mental, and spiritual)
  • Foster a good working relationship with teachers, other staff, and students.
  • Observe student behaviour and provide information to teachers.
  • Assist in preparing materials, creating displays, and undertaking other supportive activities.
  • Work within established structures, including classroom management, behavioural rules, and IPP expectations.
  • Clarify the elements of the lesson for students who are having trouble.
  • Supervise reinforcement activities.
  • Implement specific techniques, strategies, and language as directed by the teacher.
  • Document, monitor, and report to the teacher.
  • Report to teachers on observed student behaviours and outcomes
  • Keep up to date on school policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher or school administration

 

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a High School Certificate or Grade 12 Diploma,
  • Experience working the children and youth
  • Ability to read, write and record reports and with excellent communication skills
  • Must be dependable, reliable, and a team player
  • The ability to speak Dene, and other related cultural activities are additional assets.

Addiction Coordinator

Dene Tha’ First Nation Health Department is currently accepting applications for an Addiction Coordinator.
This position is based out of the Health Centre in Chateh. This position is responsible for coordinating the
implementation of activities aimed at prevention to reduce the incidence of alcohol and drug abuse by members
within the Nation’s three communities. This is a two-year contract position with competitive benefits and

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Counsel and assess the needs of clients and make appropriate arrangements for
treatment
• Maintain an efficient working arrangement with Health; school; mental health – crisis
counselors, Elders, Traditional Teachers; and child & family services
• Engage Elders to help with Dene Tha’ cultural teachings and healing
• Prepare presentations, brochures, reports, and other related materials
• Organize and plan cultural activities for clients dealing with addiction
• Assist clients to continue with recovery plan after treatment by providing them with
life skills, education, and intervention
• Case management and highly confidential record keeping practice
• Develop an annual work plan and budget
• Prepare and monitor annual budget, quarterly financial reports
REQUIREMENTS:
• Post-Secondary Education with (CACC) Certification or equivalent in social work,
psychology, sociology and/or addictions, preferably in the counseling service area or
any combination of training and work experience which provides required
knowledge, ability, and skills; have a current certificate in the field of addiction
treatment
• Organization/administrative management, planning, organizing human resources,
analytical and communication, and some counseling knowledge and skills required
• Read, understand, and comply with DTFN safety policy, safe work practices,
procedures, and rules.
• Demonstrate positive role model for staff, clients, and community at large
• Must be computer literate and have experience with computer software programs
• First Aid/CPR a definite asset; ability to speak Dene language is also considered an
asset

Children’s Oral Health Aide – Chateh

Oral Health Aide. This position will support all 3 communities. Expectation is to work 3 days in Chateh, 1 day

• Support the development of a cultural appropriate program to dental care and treatment, oral
disease prevention and good oral health promotion practices by following policies and

children livingin the communities.

Diabetes Worker – Bushe River & Chateh

community of Bushe River and Chateh. The Diabetes Worker will be responsible for increasing the knowledge
of diabetes with other health care professionals and providers in the community, who are involved with care of
people with diabetes, ensuring continuity and quality of diabetes care for the clients. This is a full-time position

RESPONSIBILITIES:
▪ Knowledge and practical skills necessary to assist in the development and deliverance of
relevant and essential diabetes services at the community level.
▪ Increase awareness in the communities of diabetes, risk factors, complications, and ways
to prevent diabetes.
▪ Teach on early detection and screening for complications of diabetes throughout the
communities.
▪ Increase community member capacity in prevention and self-management of diabetes.
▪ Work with other health care providers to support capacity building activities geared
towards supportive and effective diabetes care.
▪ Develop partnership with other agencies to maximize the reach and impact of health
promotion and primary prevention activities.

Health Care Aide – Bushe River

community of Bushe River. The Health Care Aide provides ongoing short-term home support services for
members and families. Under supervision, performs routine health-related duties and administer personal care

RESPONSIBILITIES:
▪ Assisting the doctors/nurses that are testing patient.
▪ Checking to see that the patient follows the diet and/or takes medication on time as
prescribed by the doctor.
▪ Administering bedside and personal care to members such as aid in ambulation, bathing,
personal hygiene, and dressing.
▪ Caring for mostly elderly patients as well as other patients who have lost the mobility to
do everyday tasks.
▪ Helping the patients gain their basic motor functions.

Health Initiative Coordinator – Chateh

The Health Initiative Coordinator will work with DTFN members to improve and maintain the spiritual, physical,
intellectual, social and emotional well-being of the members, families and communities. This position will

• Coordinate, monitor and provide assistance to First Responders, Safety Officers, CHR’s & Water
Monitor
• Responsible for all communication between dispatch and doctor on call

options
• Organize monthly meetings, conferences & travel

Water Quality Monitoring – Bushe River & Chateh

Dene Tha’ First Nation Health Department is currently accepting applications for a Water Monitor. The Water
Monitor will be conducting routine water sampling and chlorine residual monitoring according to the established
schedule for the community of Bushe River and Chateh. This is a full-time position with competitive benefits and

RESPONSIBILITIES:
▪ Collect and send water samples for testing; analyse samples using in-community testing
equipment
▪ Assist Environment Health Officer to provide guidance and recommendations to the
community about boil water advisories, food safety training, public education activities,
interpretation, housing inspection and community events inspection
▪ Participate during investigation of communicable disease outbreak and emergency
response related to environmental public health
▪ Conduct water sampling once a week
▪ Once a month on water trucks
▪ Once a year on cisterns

Director of Economic Development

The Dene Tha’ First Nation is currently accepting applications for an Economic Development Director. This is a full-time position and comes with a competitive benefits package. This position requires extensive experience, technical skills, and knowledge of the traditional territory.

 

Duties Include:

  • Provides, input to and supports plans and implementation strategies and initiatives as they relate to strategic community and economic development.
  • Exhibit daily administrative and financial capabilities and oversight.
  • Develops a training strategy and implementation plan for the First Nation to upskill members.
  • Delivers effective programming by supervising and coordinating the operation of services within the Economic Development and daycare programs.
  • Takes on additional special projects as assigned by EDO.

 

Qualifications:

  • Preferred university degree or college education in related area.
  • Four years work experience in multiple business settings, knowledge, and interactions.
  • Four years experience working with project development and implementation.
  • Good understanding of business practices, proposal writing and report writing.
  • Strong financial management skills.

  • Effective management, team, building, leadership, and supervisory strengths.
  • Ability to use good judgement in respecting confidentiality.
  • Being able to speak and understand the Dene language will be considered an asset.
