Security Guard
Location: Dene Tha’ First Nation Women’s and Children’s Emergency Shelter

Reports to: Facility Manager
Available Position Types: 2 Full-Time and 1 Casual Positions
Schedule: Monday to Sunday, operating on an evening shift, including weekends and statutory holidays

Position Overview
Security Guards are frontline operational staff responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and
orderly functioning of Dene Tha’ First Nation’s Women’s and Children’s Emergency Shelter
during evening operations. The role provides a consistent and professional security presence that
supports the safety and well-being of women, children, staff, and the facility, while contributing
to a calm, respectful, and trauma-informed shelter environment.
Security Guards work within a women’s and children’s emergency shelter and are expected to
carry out security functions in a non-confrontational, culturally respectful manner, aligned with
trauma-informed practices, while following all shelter policies, procedures, and cultural protocols.

Core Responsibilities
Safety, Security, and Facility Monitoring
· Maintain a visible security presence during evening hours to promote safety and deter
unsafe behaviour
· Conduct regular interior and exterior patrols of the facility, including entrances, exits,
common areas, parking areas, and grounds
· Monitor surveillance systems, alarms, and access points and respond appropriately to
safety or security concerns
· Manage and control access to the facility in accordance with shelter policies
· Maintain accurate awareness of individuals present in the facility using required sign-in
logs or tracking systems

Emergency Response and Incident Management
· Respond promptly and professionally to safety concerns, incidents, or emergencies
involving clients, children, staff, or the facility
· Use trauma-informed, culturally respectful, and non-violent de-escalation techniques when
responding to conflict or distress
· Contact and coordinate with emergency services (EMS, Fire, RCMP) when required
· Provide First Aid or CPR within the scope of training until additional assistance arrives
· Initiate and support emergency procedures, including lockdowns or evacuations, in
accordance with shelter protocols

Collaboration with Shelter Staff
· Work collaboratively with Case Support Workers, Intake Workers, and other facility staff
to support coordinated responses to safety concerns during evening hours
· Communicate clearly and promptly with on-shift staff regarding incidents, risks, or
emerging safety issues
· Support staff during high-risk or high-volume situations while maintaining clear role
boundaries
· Participate in shift handovers and provide accurate pass-down information to ensure
continuity between shifts
· Support general shelter operations as requested by management while on duty

Documentation, Reporting, and Accountability
· Complete accurate, timely, and detailed incident reports, occurrence logs, and shift
documentation
· Record observations related to safety concerns, policy violations, or incidents in
accordance with shelter procedures
· Ensure documentation is factual, objective, and submitted within required timelines
· Maintain confidentiality and discretion in all written and verbal communications

Professional Conduct
· Interact with women, children, staff, and visitors in a respectful, calm, and culturally
appropriate manner
· Maintain professional boundaries and avoid confrontational, punitive, or authoritative
behaviour inconsistent with a trauma-informed shelter environment
· Demonstrate awareness of trauma, gender-based violence, and the unique needs of women
and children accessing emergency shelter services

Shared Shelter-Wide Responsibilities
All employees of the DTFN Women’s and Children’s Emergency Shelter work within the context
of a 24/7 emergency shelter environment and share responsibility for upholding the safety, dignity,
confidentiality, and well-being of all clients, children, families, staff, and the facility. While not all
positions are shift-based or client-facing, all staff are expected to contribute to the effective and
professional operation of the shelter by responding appropriately to safety concerns within the
scope of their role, communicating concerns promptly to on-shift staff or management, and
supporting colleagues during high-volume or critical situations as reasonably required.
All staff are expected to maintain ongoing compliance with confidentiality and privacy obligations
and to participate in required trauma-informed, cultural safety, and role-specific training
throughout their employment. These obligations are fundamental conditions of continued
employment within the shelter.

Qualifications
· Valid Alberta Security Guard Licence
· Minimum two years of experience in security, emergency response, or safety-related roles,
preferably in a shelter, healthcare, or community setting
· Demonstrated ability to remain calm, professional, and respectful in high-stress or crisis
situations
· Strong observation, communication, and documentation skills
· Knowledge of Indigenous culture, values, and language is a strong asset
· Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and ability to travel as required
· WHMIS, First Aid, CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
· Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check

Work Environment and Conditions
· Scheduled evening shifts, with coverage required seven days per week, including weekends
and statutory holidays
· Role involves prolonged periods of standing, walking, and monitoring indoor and outdoor
areas
· Trauma-exposed environment requiring emotional regulation, professionalism, and strict
adherence to confidentiality
